How to track installments (hulugan) with friends
Short answer: agree on the total, how much is due each time and on which dates, then write each payment down as it happens. Only the part whose date has passed is late, so check what’s due, not the whole balance. Paying early simply moves the next due date on.
Step by step
- Agree on the plan first: the total, the amount each time, and the dates (for example every 15th and 30th, or every 15 days).
- Agree what happens if someone is late — a reminder, or a small interest on the overdue part. Keep it simple and fair.
- Write down every payment with its date, the day it’s made.
- Before each due date, check what’s due: every part whose date has passed, minus what’s been paid.
- When it’s paid off, close it so nobody gets reminded again.
Worked example: a ₱12,000 bike, paid in parts
Arvin paid ₱12,000 for a bike for Aaliyah. She pays him back ₱2,000 every 15th and 30th, starting 15 November.
| # | Due | Amount | Paid in all by then |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 Nov | ₱2,000 | ₱2,000 |
| 2 | 30 Nov | ₱2,000 | ₱4,000 |
| 3 | 15 Dec | ₱2,000 | ₱6,000 |
| 4 | 30 Dec | ₱2,000 | ₱8,000 |
| 5 | 15 Jan | ₱2,000 | ₱10,000 |
| 6 | 30 Jan | ₱2,000 | ₱12,000 |
In February there’s no 30th, so the second payment that month falls on the last day, the 28th.
If she pays late
Say she only managed ₱500 by 15 November, and they agreed on 0.5% a day on whatever is overdue. ₱1,500 of the first part is late:
| Day | Overdue | Interest that day | She owes now |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 Nov | ₱1,500 | ₱7.50 | ₱1,507.50 |
| 17 Nov | ₱1,500 | ₱7.50 | ₱1,515.00 |
Interest is only on the late ₱1,500, never on the ₱10,000 that isn’t due yet. When she pays, it goes to the interest first, then to the overdue part.
If she pays ahead
If she pays ₱4,000 on 15 November, the 30 November part is already covered, so her next due date becomes 15 December. Nobody should chase her for the 30th.
Doing it in Owlsplit
- Make a trip (for example “Bike hulugan”) and add the expense: Arvin paid ₱12,000, all for Aaliyah.
- Under Members → Payment deadline, set the first due date, choose In parts, every 15th and 30th, and enter ₱2,000 each time. Add late interest and extra reminder emails (both Premium) if you agreed on them, then tap Save.
- Aaliyah pays by Arvin’s GCash or Maya QR and taps Mark as paid; Arvin taps Received.
- Settle shows each person what’s due next and when, what’s overdue, and the total left. If they have an account, they get an email 2 days before each due date, on the day and the day after.
Questions
Can Owlsplit track hulugan or installments between friends?
Yes. Set a deadline on the trip, choose to pay in parts every month, every 15th and 30th, or every 15 days, and enter the amount due each time. Each person sees what they owe next and when.
What if someone pays ahead?
Their next due date moves on. If they already paid the 30th’s part early, their next one is the 15th, and nobody is reminded about a part that’s already paid.
Is late interest required?
No, it’s optional and only if the group agrees. If you add it, it’s charged only on the part that’s overdue, never on parts that aren’t due yet.
Does Owlsplit collect the payments?
No. Members pay each other directly, by GCash, Maya or bank QR, and mark it paid. Owlsplit only keeps the record and works out the amounts.
