How to split trip expenses with friends
Short answer: write down every expense during the trip with who paid and who it was for. At the end, each person’s balance is what they paid minus their share of everything. People with a negative balance pay back the people who covered them, and the group is settled.
Step by step
- Agree how you’ll split before the trip: usually equally, with exceptions for things only some people did.
- Log each expense when it happens: what it was, how much, who paid, and who it was for.
- Keep receipts (a photo is enough) for the big ones like the hotel and tours.
- Work out balances at the end: what each person paid, minus their share.
- Settle up: everyone who owes pays back whoever covered them, and each payment is marked as paid.
Worked example: four friends in Boracay
Four friends spent ₱18,120 on a trip, with a different person paying for each thing. Every expense was shared equally.
| Expense | Paid by | Amount | Each person’s share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resort, 2 nights | Lin | ₱9,600 | ₱2,400 |
| Seafood dinner | Aaliyah | ₱3,840 | ₱960 |
| Island hopping | Rajhi | ₱4,200 | ₱1,050 |
| Tricycle | Arvin | ₱480 | ₱120 |
| Total | ₱18,120 | ₱4,530 | |
Each person’s balance
Balance = what you paid − your share (₱4,530). Positive means the group owes you.
| Person | Paid | Share | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lin | ₱9,600 | ₱4,530 | +₱5,070 |
| Rajhi | ₱4,200 | ₱4,530 | −₱330 |
| Aaliyah | ₱3,840 | ₱4,530 | −₱690 |
| Arvin | ₱480 | ₱4,530 | −₱4,050 |
Who pays whom
Each person pays back whoever covered them. Between two people, what they owe each other cancels out: Aaliyah owes Lin ₱2,400 for the resort, Lin owes Aaliyah ₱960 for dinner, so Aaliyah pays Lin the difference, ₱1,440.
| Payment | Amount |
|---|---|
| Arvin → Lin | ₱2,280 |
| Aaliyah → Lin | ₱1,440 |
| Rajhi → Lin | ₱1,350 |
| Arvin → Rajhi | ₱930 |
| Arvin → Aaliyah | ₱840 |
| Aaliyah → Rajhi | ₱90 |
After these payments every balance is zero: Lin receives ₱5,070, Arvin pays ₱4,050 in all, and so on. Because each payment traces back to specific expenses, anyone can check why they owe what they owe.
Tips that prevent arguments
- Log it the same day. Nobody remembers who paid for the tricycle a week later.
- Split by item when orders differ. See how to split a bill when everyone ordered different things.
- Exclude people from things they skipped. If two people didn’t go island hopping, share it among the others only.
- Use one currency per trip. Record what you actually paid; convert only when comparing.
- Settle by QR. Paying with the other person’s GCash or Maya QR code avoids typos in account numbers.
Doing it in Owlsplit
- Start a trip and add everyone, or share the 8-character trip code so they join themselves.
- Add each expense as it happens: who paid, how much, and who it was for. Everyone in the trip sees it live.
- Open Settle to see exactly who pays whom, with each payment’s breakdown and the payee’s QR code.
- When someone pays, they (or the person paid) tap Mark as paid.
Questions
Should one person pay for everything on a group trip?
It doesn’t matter who pays, as long as every expense is written down with who paid and who it was for. At the end, each person’s balance shows who is owed and who owes.
When should a group settle up after a trip?
Settle within a few days of getting home, while receipts and memories are fresh. Logging expenses during the trip means settling takes minutes.
How do you work out who owes whom?
For each expense, everyone who shared it owes the person who paid their share. Between any two people, the amounts they owe each other cancel out, leaving one payment in one direction.
